New app alerts drivers to unexpected traffic delays

The Tasmanian Liberal Government has launched a new smartphone app that will provide real-time information about traffic conditions on key commuter routes.

Covering the major routes through Hobart and Launceston and with further expansion planned, the TrafficTAS app uses existing traffic monitoring technology to alert users about unexpected travel delays such as when there is a crash.

Providing advance warning allows road users to avoid disruptions due to crashes, improving traffic flow and reducing queues.

The app also provides estimated travel times on key routes based on current traffic conditions.

The service covers the State-managed roads in the two cities, including the Southern Outlet, the Brooker, Tasman and East Derwent Highways, and Macquarie and Davey Streets in Hobart; and the Midland, West Tamar and East Tamar Highways and Wellington and Bathurst Streets in Launceston.

The app is part of a broader program to use smart technology to better manage the road network and we will continue to roll out more of these types of initiatives in the future.

TrafficTAS is expected to be particularly helpful to commuters and other regular users of the road network.

It works by collecting information from Bluetooth beacons strategically placed along routes for traffic monitoring and data collection and alerts users via the Bluetooth connection in their phones. No personally identifiable information is collected or stored by the app or the Department of State Growth.

The alerts are delivered either through the phone speaker or the car’s audio system and tell users how much extra time their journey is expected to take.

All that is required to use the TrafficTAS app is a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone. The app is available from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
