Gavin Pearce, Minister for Primary Industries and Water
Tasmanians are invited to have their say on the future of State’s agriculture sector through the development of a new long-term strategy.
Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Gavin Pearce, said our Government is delivering for Tasmanians and the industries that allow us to thrive.
“The discussion paper released today seeks feedback on the key policy priorities for the new long-term Agriculture Strategy, ensuring we have the right settings in place to support industry,” Minister Pearce said.
“We know that we need to work together to move our state forward – and that’s what this Strategy is all about.
“The Strategy will guide how we can best work with industry to boost agricultural productivity and unlock opportunities across freight, agritourism, education, infrastructure, and workforce development.
“We know that the adoption of smarter technologies, data-driven practices and precision agriculture will be essential for future industry growth.
“This will be an important focus of the new strategy.”
The development of the new long-term strategy comes five years after the release of the Competitiveness of Tasmanian Agriculture for 2050 White Paper.
“Agriculture is a pillar of Tasmania’s economy, with a farm-gate value of nearly $2.5 billion in 2022-23,” Minister Pearce said.
“The collective achievements of farmers, agribusinesses, industry groups, researchers, rural communities and Government has allowed us to remain on track to reach our AgriVision 2050 target to grow the annual farm gate value of agriculture to $10 billion by 2050.”
Feedback on the discussion paper is the first step in developing a new long-term Agriculture Strategy.
Following this initial phase, industry will have further opportunities to contribute through industry roundtables. A draft strategy will be released for comment next year.
