Nick Duigan, Minister for Energy and Renewables

Major investment being made in renewable energy projects in the state by engineering and infrastructure heavyweight Gamuda, has been welcomed by the Tasmanian Government.

Gamuda recently announced its partnership with Tasmanian landowners and Alternate Path to co-develop the Cellars Hill Wind Farm and the Weasel Solar Farm projects, with a total anticipated project value of $2 billion.

Minister for Energy and Renewables, Nick Duigan, welcomed senior representatives from Gamuda to Tasmania recently while they visited the two Central Highland project sites.

“Tasmania has what the world wants, and our renewable energy potential continues to attract investors,” Minister Duigan said.

“A significant amount of capital is required to make Tasmania’s renewable energy future a reality, and every project is playing its part.

“It is great to see a company like Gamuda recognising Tasmania’s clean energy pedigree and potential, and having the confidence to commit to these projects.”

Cellars Hill Wind Farm, a Major Project under Tasmania’s streamlined planning legislation, will deliver 350 MW of wind energy and a co-located battery energy storage system.

The 250MW Weasel Solar Farm will generate renewable energy through the strategic integration of solar energy production, mixed with agricultural production.

“Both projects will generate hundreds of construction jobs, and provide ongoing employment and economic activity, particularly for Central Highlands communities,” Minister Duigan said.

“Importantly, by partnering with the local community, households within a 12-kilometre radius will be offered energy rebates, cutting their power bills significantly.

“This is an exciting development and something the Government expects to see more of off the back of Project Marinus proceeding – underpinning the energy needs of our growing economy and increasing electrification over the long term, delivering for Tasmania.”

Comments attributable to Jarred Hardman, Chief Strategy and Growth Officer, Gamuda:
“The Tasmanian energy projects perfectly fit Gamuda’s energy strategy to become a leading end-to-end developer, builder, and owner of energy assets to accelerate Australia’s clean energy future.”

Comments attributable to Peter Downie, Landowner:
“We have been in discussion with Gamuda for many months and have seen their genuine partnership approach and commitment to our community values. We’re excited to move forward together to deliver these projects for the benefit of Tasmanians.”

Comments attributable to Andrew Clark, Executive Director, Alternate Path (co-investor):
“We have been deliberate in choosing a partner that not only brings financial strength and technical expertise, but also shares our commitment to social licence and landowner-led principles.”

This investment is Gamuda’s first Australian renewable energy investment and builds on its success in delivering major Australian infrastructure projects.

Subject to further planning and development processes and approvals, construction of Weasel Solar Farm is expected to commence in 2026-27 and Cellars Hill Wind Farm in 2027-28.
