Supporting Tasmanian businesses to go electric

Tasmania’s emissions profile continues to be the envy of the nation and the world, and this Government is committed to leading Australia’s transition to a low emissions economy, which will help strengthen our State’s future.

To encourage the uptake of electric vehicles and reduce the State’s reliance on imported fossil fuels, the Tasmanian Liberal Government is waiving stamp duty on new and used electric vehicles for two years.

As at 31 July 2022, the Government has waived duty on 676 electric vehicles, and the number of electric vehicles on our roads has nearly doubled over the past year to more than 1100.

TasFast AirFreight is one of the businesses to benefit from this initiative, with the Tasmanian company purchasing two state of the art, Skywell EC11 electric delivery vans earlier this year to service the Hobart area.

TasFast specialises in door-to-door overnight freight and is committed to using renewable energy to reduce its carbon footprint, helping deliver a more sustainable future for our planet.

TasFast, like our Government, has ambitious targets and I would like to congratulate them for having such a forward-thinking and sustainable approach to their daily business operations.

To further support the uptake of electric vehicles, we are rolling out an additional 43 EV fast and destination chargers across regional Tasmania this year, complementing our comprehensive state-wide charging network.

This week in Parliament we have started debating the Government’s new climate change legislation, including a nation-leading target of net zero emissions, or lower, from 2030.

The Climate Change (State Action) Amendment Bill 2021 legislates, amongst other initiatives, a requirement for Emissions Reduction and Resilience Plans for each sector of our economy.

The ERRP for the transport sector will outline further measures to support EV uptake and reduce emissions, including how best to support businesses like TasFast to further reduce their transport-related emissions.

Our ambitious emissions targets will deliver far-reaching benefits to our global environment and new investment and jobs to Tasmania.
