Rethink urged on Kangaroo Bay development

Premier and Minister for Tourism, Jeremy Rockliff is urging the Clarence City Council to reconsider its decision on the proposed tourism development at Kangaroo Bay.

The Premier will write offering to convene an urgent meeting of key stakeholders involved in the project to come together to try to find a way forward.

“I understand there are a variety of views on the project, but the bottom line is it would be a lost opportunity for the site to be left a wasteland for years as the Council and developer fight over a buyback,” the Premier said.

“We’ve seen it with the Droughty Point project, and now we’re seeing it with the Kangaroo Bay project.

“I know Tasmanians want to make sure our State isn’t being left behind and I’m absolutely committed to leaving no stone unturned in finding ways to make these important projects a reality.

The Premier is issuing invitations to Council representatives, along with the proponents and peak tourism, construction and hospitality bodies to meet with him and the Ministers for Planning, State Development, Construction and Housing and Local Government.

“I would appreciate the Council coming to the table and outlining their vision for the development of the site.

“We need to work together to find ways thorough these challenges to ensure we don’t let significant opportunities for economic growth and jobs slip through our fingers.”
