Tasmanian health staff in the North of the State now have access to a dedicated education and training facility with the official opening of tunapri mapali building at the Launceston General Hospital (LGH).
The tunapri mapali building – which means “lots of knowledge” in palawa kani – is now home to the Anne O’Byrne Education Centre and new administrative facilities that include an inter-disciplinary simulation laboratory and training centre, a computer training room and flexible multi-purpose conference and meeting rooms.
The new administration and education building also provides contemporary office accommodation, with 76 desk spaces per floor on levels two and three and a mix of quiet rooms, collaboration spaces and meeting rooms.
The Education Centre hosts the LGH’s Nursing Education Unit and will provide a critical learning and collaboration hub for the Tasmanian Health Service North.
Importantly, the space allows our clinical educators to train colleagues and practice lifesaving interventions which are so vitally important.
In recognition of Anne O’Byrne and her contribution to the provision of health care in the northern community, Level 1 has been named the Anne O’Byrne Education Centre with the current Anne O’Byrne building to be replaced as part of the LGH Precinct Masterplan.
The new $11 million building is part of stage one of the Tasmanian Liberal Government’s LGH Precinct Masterplan, which will see $580 million invested in the LGH over 10 years to improve facilities and increase capacity to meet future service demand.
Stage One of the Masterplan is now substantially completed, with several key projects already operational and final works due to be finished in the coming months.
The next stages of the LGH Precinct Masterplan will see the delivery of other major construction projects, including a new mental health services precinct, an expanded acute care zone and a new tower on the current Northside site to expand and modernise inpatient and outpatient services.
The important redevelopment projects we are delivering over the life of the Masterplan will upgrade, expand and modernise facilities at the LGH to respond to current and future demand for health services in Northern Tasmania.
