More students continuing senior secondary education

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is setting young people up to succeed by increasing participation through to Year 12 and providing students with the skills and qualifications needed for their future.

Pleasingly, the percentage of young Tasmanians continuing their senior secondary education and training has reached the highest levels ever achieved in our State.

The Office of Tasmanian Assessment, Standards and Certification (TASC) has released retention data showing the continued participation in education and training of the 2019 cohort of Year 10 students from all school sectors.

Of those students, 86.1 per cent continued to Year 11, which is an increase of 6.9 per cent over the past 10 years. While 76.9 per cent of the students continued to Year 12 – a 9.5 per cent increase over the same period.

Tasmania continues to significantly grow our rates of educational engagement, with more students than ever before participating in the range of senior secondary and training options available for our young people

Importantly, education attainment over the past 10 years is also growing, with students achieving a:

  • 16.4% increase in attainment of the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE)
  • 1.1% increase in attainment of an Australian Tertiary Admission Ranking (ATAR)
  • 4.3% increase in attainment of a Vocational Education and Training (VET) Certificate.

Our Government knows that investing in the education of young people is an investment in Tasmania’s future and we have made significant headway in breaking down expectations that it is okay to finish education and training at the end of Year 10.

Direct retention includes study at any Tasmanian school, Registered Training Organisation or organisation delivering TASC recognised formal learning.

The data does not include students who: left the state to continue Year 11 or 12; left the state and continued their studies with an interstate VET provider; secured early admission to university via a gifted students’ program or similar; and secured full-time work.
