Delivering improved alcohol and other drug services for Tasmanians

The Tasmanian Liberal Government’s 10-year plan to reform alcohol and other drug services across the State has reached another milestone with the launch of the AOD Reform Agenda Implementation Plan.

The Implementation Plan has been developed through comprehensive consultation with the Tasmanian community, and is endorsed by key stakeholders and people with lived experience.

Premier and Minister for Mental Health and Welbeing, Jeremy Rockliff, said the Government had implemented a number of priority projects since the release of the Reform Agenda for the AOD Sector in Tasmania.

“We are doing what matters for Tasmanians by delivering programs such as Detox@Home in Hobart and Launceston, support for the Alcohol, Tobacco and other Drugs Council Tasmania’s Lived Experience Advocacy Service, increased case management and nursing staff within the Alcohol and Drug Service, and the establishment of a government-led alcohol and other drug Homeless Consultation and Liaison Service,” Premier Rockliff said.

The Government will now progress further actions under the Implementation Plan, including:

  • Delivering a Drug and Alcohol Brief Intervention Service within the Royal Hobart Hospital;
  • Developing a Client Participation Framework for Tasmania to inform lived experience participation in care development and provision;
  • Developing a sector-wide alcohol and other drug Service Delivery Framework to provide guidance and clarity around service delivery across the continuum of care;
  • Developing an alcohol and other drug Youth Framework to better consider and respond to the alcohol and other drug treatment needs of young Tasmanians;
  • Developing an alcohol and other drug services Workforce Development Strategy to provide clarity around key workforce competencies and guide action to address recruitment and retention within the sector;
  • Working with the Alcohol, Tobacco and other Drugs Council Tasmania to deliver Trauma Informed Care training; and
  • Working with Primary Health Tasmania to continue training for general practitioners working with people who are impacted by alcohol and other drug use.

“Our Government is working in partnership with the alcohol and other drug sector and the broader Tasmanian community to build an integrated and coordinated system, so people can access appropriate, timely, and effective care for their needs,” Premier Rockliff said.
