$500 million project a major boost for State’s housing stock

The Tasmanian Liberal Government welcomes the significant housing and jobs boost being delivered by Noble Ventures’ The Mills project in New Norfolk.

Once complete, this $500 million development will provide more than 700 homes and apartments across its residential and aged care precincts along with a positive impact of increased investment in regional Tasmania.

This much-needed housing will benefit Tasmanians from all stages of life, from first-home buyers and families looking for more space, to those looking to downsize and retirees.

This project demonstrates the significant role that private development plays in the State’s housing environment.

Developments such as this are working in unison with the Tasmanian Government’s ambitious $1.5 billion housing plan that will deliver 10,000 new homes over the next decade.

Tackling our State’s housing shortage requires collaboration across all sectors and it’s terrific to see the private sector has recognised and responded to this local need - delivering a significant expansion to the local community.

The Tasmanian Government is taking action to encourage more private sector investment in the housing market by introducing land tax and stamp duty reforms, accelerating land supply and expanding private rental initiatives.

These measures will help reduce house prices and put downward pressure on rents.

We recognise The Mills project, which is just 500 metres from the New Norfolk town centre, will bring massive benefits to the Derwent Valley and the wider community, including thousands of new jobs, increased retail spending and the opportunity for people to purchase a new home.

The hotel, hospital, aged care facility, childcare centre and commercial co-op will all provide excellent employment opportunities for future residents of this development as well as those already living in the region.

This is a fantastic development for the Derwent Valley and for Tasmania and I congratulate Noble Ventures on their work.

I wish everyone involved in The Mills development the best of luck and I look forward to watching its progress and growth over the years to come.
