Walkers and cyclists will be able to safely move from the Freycinet National Park Visitor Centre to the Wineglass Bay carpark with the opening of a new shared use track.
The new four kilometre $1.4 million track was funded as part of the Government’s $16 million Improving Statewide Visitor Infrastructure Program, and removes the danger of pedestrians and riders using the road.
The track not only improves the visitor experience through safety, but provides amazing views of the park and offers additional short walk opportunities.
The shared use track is just one of the improvements at the park, with recent works undertaken to upgrade the Wineglass Bay Lookout walking track. The track upgrade included new steps, seating and drainage works to improve safety and the visitor experience.
The $100,000 track upgrade was funded through the Tasmanian Government’s Public Maintenance Stimulus Funding. The majority of these works were undertaken during the COVID-19 closure of Freycinet National Park and provided continued employment for Tasmanian contractors – supporting local jobs when it was needed most.
The new shared use track was identified as a priority in the Freycinet Peninsula Master Plan 2019. The plan aims to protect the natural and cultural assets, provide a place for the community to connect with the peninsula and maintain its mantle as an iconic visitor destination.
