Support available for Tasmanians impacted by floods

The Tasmanian Government is continuing to support our communities in the North and North West impacted by the severe flooding over recent days.

There is no doubt this is a very difficult time for many Tasmanians, and our thoughts are with everyone whose lives have been disrupted.

The Tasmanian Government continues to stand with the community, and while the future is uncertain, we will get through this, as we’ve done in the past.

Our emergency services have done a tremendous job right throughout, and we extend our sincere gratitude to them, on behalf of all Tasmanians.

While the rains are easing in some areas, we are not out of the woods yet, and Tasmanians in affected areas must remain vigilant.

We are continuing to monitor the situation closely and police and SES are keeping communities informed as we work through this situation. For updates on the current weather and safety information please go to www.alert.tas.gov.au/.

Importantly, immediate support is available to help those affected, and we welcome today’s announcement of further disaster assistance support from the Federal Government.

These payments will provide short-term payments to assist people of Tasmania’s North and North West, including income support where applicable.

This support is in addition to the Emergency Assistance Grants announced jointly by the Tasmanian and Australian Government’s last Friday to assist flood-affected individuals and communities.

The State Government will continue to work in collaboration with Local and Commonwealth Government to support response and recovery activities in these affected communities.

We also recognise that these floods are traumatic for those who are currently affected and also those who have lived through similar situations, and images on the news and social media can be confronting.

Flood events can impact people in different ways, and may lead to people feeling overwhelmed by a range of emotions including stress, sadness and anxiety.

These are normal reactions and there is support available.
