South Burnie Bowls Club upgrades on track for the summer season

Extensive upgrades to a popular lawn bowls club in Tasmania’s North West are nearing completion.

The South Burnie Bowls Club and Community Complex has been a fixture of the local bowls community since 1952, and requires works to improve its energy efficiency, accessibility, and kitchen and bar facilities.

Minister for Sport, Nick Duigan, said the upgraded complex would improve the experience for both bowlers and spectators.

“The Tasmanian Government recognises the significant contribution that clubs such as South Burnie Bowls make to the community, by bringing people together and promoting healthy activity in people of all ages,” Minister Duigan said.

“We are proud to have invested in this project with more than $2 million, and to have worked together with the South Burnie Bowls team and the Burnie City Council to deliver the upgrades.

“The upgraded complex will provide an enhanced experience for both for spectators and bowlers.

“The upgrades include solar installation and double glazing for energy efficiency, increased accessibility including to the toilets, a function room for up to 100 people and upgraded kitchen and bar facilities.

“We understand the importance of sport and active recreation, which is why we’re investing in these important projects.

“As part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we are committed to ensuring more Tasmanians, regardless of their age or background, get active and have somewhere to play a game – whether it’s competitive or social.

“With such consistent use over the decades, it was high time the South Burnie Bowls Club had a revamp to ensure the facilities are fit-for-purpose and accessible for everyone.

“Thank you to Tasmanian building company, Mead Con, for their work to deliver this upgrade.”

The South Burnie Bowls Club and Community Complex is due to reopen in November 2026.
