Major upgrade of Silverdome velodrome underway

Tasmania's cycling community is set to benefit from upgrades to the Silverdome velodrome, with specialist works commencing today.

Minister for Sport, Nick Duigan, said track sanding and resurfacing works are being delivered by the Tasmanian Government as part of the broader $12 million Silverdome upgrades, ensuring the facility continues to support cyclists for decades to come.

“This refurbishment demonstrates our Government’s commitment to delivering sports facilities for community sport and athlete development pathways,” Minister Duigan said.

“The works will deliver important long-term benefits for athletes and the wider cycling community. It includes specialist repairs, full-track sanding and repainting of line markings to improve rider safety and preserve the integrity of the internationally significant facility.

“Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future is delivering the sporting infrastructure our communities need to stay active and pursue their dreams."

The Silverdome has played a significant role in developing Tasmanian cyclists for more than 40 years and remains an important part of our sporting infrastructure.

“We want talented Tasmanian cyclists to be able to train, compete and pursue their sporting ambitions without having to leave the State," Minister Duigan said.

“Investing in facilities like the Silverdome helps strengthen local athlete pathways and supports the next generation of Tasmanian cycling talent.”

The timing of the works has been coordinated with other components of the Silverdome redevelopment program, including track modifications and the installation of a new track insert.

Significant planning has been undertaken to support the specialist nature of velodrome maintenance.

“We know the closure is disruptive to athletes, however the wait with be worthwhile, given the benefits associated with these track upgrades and securing the long-term future of cycling at the venue,” Minister Duigan said.

Velotrack, a world-leading German specialist in velodrome construction, maintenance and track resurfacing, is delivering the works.

The Silverdome velodrome is one of only six indoor timber cycling tracks in Australia and holds a special place in Tasmania's sporting history. Built in 1984 using Tasmanian oak hardwood, it is unique among Australian indoor velodromes due to its hardwood timber construction.
