Tasmania’s mining and minerals processing sector continues to go from strength to strength.
It contributes the lion’s share of our exports by value - a staggering $3.1 billion in the 12 months to June 2022, or more than 65 per cent.
It provides more than 5,200 jobs, most of which are across regional and rural Tasmania.
And it is delivering record royalties. In 2021/22, Tasmania received almost $84 million in mineral royalties and more than $2 million in rentals and other fees.
This result eclipses last year’s figures by more than $23 million.
These payments provide important services like health and education that benefit all Tasmanians.
Tasmania has also had its highest quarterly mineral exploration spend since ABS records began.
The June 2022 spend was $12.5 million, contributing to an overall 12 monthly spend of more than $32 million—more than 130 per cent higher than the previous 12 months.
Exploration helps find new ore bodies that provide the minerals our world needs and jobs for our regions.
These figures are a sign that our proactive approach and support for the sector is paying dividends.
With the world rapidly moving towards a renewable energy future, demand for key and critical minerals needed to power this transition will only increase.
This includes minerals such as copper, tin, nickel, and zinc - all of which are available in Tasmania.
Tasmania, with its world-respected regulatory framework, balanced approach to sustainable resource management and world-leading renewable energy credentials, is in the box seat to provide the minerals the world needs for a renewable energy future.
The Tasmanian Liberal Government knows a strong economy is vital to funding the essential services that we all need, and our mining and minerals processing sector is delivering more jobs for Tasmanians.
