Midwifery education at the University of Tasmania is another step closer, with recruitment activities now underway in preparation for the re-introduction of the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery from next year.
The Tasmanian Government and the University of Tasmania have partnered to re-establish the course from June 2026, as part of our commitment to educating midwives through the University of Tasmania.
The University of Tasmania has appointed a Senior Lecturer in Midwifery to coordinate the delivery of the course, while a nationwide recruitment process for the Professor of Midwifery role is in progress.
Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer, said we are delivering for Tasmania by expanding opportunities for midwifery education in the State.
“The re-introduction of the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery at the University of Tasmania is the first step in supporting those seeking to become a midwife in our State,’’ Minister Archer said.
“This is also an important milestone because it creates the opportunity for broader postgraduate education offerings for our existing midwifery workforce, including research and advanced practice.
“Growing our own workforce and supporting midwives to work in our maternity services ensures that we can deliver safe, person-centred care, that is accessible, equitable and meets the needs of Tasmanian women.”
Registered Nurses who are interested in studying the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery can attend online information sessions scheduled to occur in November.
More information will be provided through the University of Tasmania, as well as on the Department of Health website and social media in the coming week.
The re-introduction of the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery at the University of Tasmania is one of a number of initiatives that have been progressed this year to grow the midwifery workforce of the future.
Educating midwives in Tasmania is a key principle of the recently released Midwifery Matters Tasmanian Midwifery Workforce Strategy Consultation Draft 2025-2030.
