Bragging rights will be on the line this weekend as seven of Tasmania’s top mine rescue teams compete in the 37th Tasmanian Minerals Emergency Response Competition.

The two-day event, held from 24–25 October, will see teams from Bluestone Mines Tasmania JV, Grange Resources, Henty Gold Mine, Cement Australia (Cornwall), MMG Rosebery, Bell Bay Aluminium, and the TMEC Mutual Aid Team compete across a range of scenarios including first aid, firefighting, rope rescue, search and rescue, team skills and theory.

Minister for Business, Industry and Resources, Felix Ellis, said the annual competition held this year at Renison Bell on the state’s west coast was a vital part of Tasmania’s mining safety culture, ensuring mine rescue teams are ready to respond when needed.

“This competition is more than a showcase of skill. It’s about preparedness, teamwork, and confidence that our industry can respond quickly and effectively in an emergency,” Minister Ellis said.

“Our mining industry is renowned nationally for its professionalism and teamwork.

“The Tasmanian Minerals, Manufacturing and Energy Council’s Emergency Response Committee has built a mutual aid model that’s been replicated across Australia — ensuring that no matter which site you work at, trained and equipped teams can respond when it counts most.”

Minister Ellis said the event will bring more than 100 participants, adjudicators, and supporters to the west coast, providing a welcome economic boost to local businesses and accommodation providers.

“It’s great to see this year’s competition back on the west coast, a region that continues to be the heart of Tasmania’s mining heritage.

“To everyone competing this weekend, thank you for the skill, professionalism, and courage you bring to your roles. Your work helps make Tasmania’s mines, and communities, safer places.”
