Second season on the way for Bay of Fires

A second season is in the works for the highly anticipated Tasmanian drama television series Bay of Fires, with support from the Tasmanian Government.

The series is one of four projects to share in $80,000 in grant funding through the latest round of Screen Tasmania’s Project Development Program.

Minister for the Arts Elise Archer said the Rockliff Liberal Government is getting things done by providing funding to assist Tasmanian film projects to reach full production stage.

“We have already seen the benefits from the first season of Bay of Fires, not only in terms of the broader economy, but also with increased employment for locals on the West Coast during a traditionally quieter time for businesses.

“To also receive funding is the first feature film project from newly formed kutikina Productions – the first Tasmanian Aboriginal screen production company, owned and operated by playwright-screenwriter Nathan Maynard and author-screenwriter Adam Thompson.

“Our screen industry is a valuable contributor to our economy that supports jobs right around the State, and our ongoing screen investment has allowed our local industry to grow, resulting in the strongest level of back-to-back production activity in the State’s history.”

The Project Development Program provides support at a crucial part of the filmmaking process, helping creative teams to see, and in turn present, the full potential of their concepts.

The four successful projects are:

  1. Bay of Fires season 2 – continuation of highly anticipated drama series co-created, produced by and starring Marta Dusseldorp, filmed in Tasmania largely on the West Coast;
  2. Dog Island – psychological coming-of-age drama by Tasmanian Aboriginal screen production company kutikina;
  3. Bruny – an environmental political thriller series about family, love, loyalty and the new world order, adapting Heather Rose’s landmark novel; and
  4. Standing – a teen coming-of-age drama series set in Devonport and featuring the writing talents of Adam Thompson, Caitlin Richardson and social media Tasmanian superstar Ella Watkins.
