Delivering upgrades to community sports facilities

The Hillwood Recreation Ground will soon be home to the first outdoor multi-sport court in the George Town municipality, with the help of grant program delivered by the Tasmanian Government.

Minister for Sport, Nick Duigan, said the investment was part of the Government’s Minor Facilities Upgrade Program.

“We are delivering funding to 22 projects across the State, with an investment of $676,836. This includes nine in the South, eight in the North and five in the North-West,” Minister Duigan said.

“Our Government is improving accessibility and availability of existing facilities for community sport and active recreation use, delivering on a key part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future.”

The Hillwood Recreation ground project was identified through community consultation.

“Our Government delivering for the George Town community with our $60,000 investment towards the Hillwood Multi-purpose Court Upgrade,” Minister Duigan said.

“This project will transform an underutilised tennis court into a modern multi-purpose court that will support tennis, basketball, netball, pickleball and futsal.

“It will provide more opportunities for people of all ages to be active, connect with others and enjoy their local community.

“Projects like this are only possible through strong partnerships, and I thank George Town Council and the Hillwood Progress Association for their commitment to this important upgrade, along with all the dedicated people who worked to secure grants for their community or sporting groups.”

The Hillwood upgrade will include the installation of a combined basketball and netball tower.

Construction is expected to commence in September 2026 and be completed by the end of this year.
