In a coup for Tasmania, I am thrilled that our State will play host to Alone Australia.
The original American format of Alone is a worldwide phenomenon, ranking among SBS’s most watched television programs ever.
As Minister for the Arts, I am pleased to support the production of what promises to become a landmark series for both SBS and Australian TV production through our Government's Screen Innovation Fund.
Alone Australia will feature Tasmania’s extraordinary natural and cultural landscapes, and showcase our State to the nation and the world, when it reaches TV and streaming services.
Tasmania now joins the likes of Patagonia, British Columbia, Northern Mongolia, Canada’s Northwest Territories, and northern Norway in hosting versions of the show.
Alone Australia airdrops 10 contestants separately into the remote wilds of Tasmania with only their survival skills to rely on, to win the prize of $250,000.
Screen Tasmania has worked closely with SBS and ITV Studios Australia, local councils, the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service, landowners, and other government agencies to ensure the production is safe and sustainable, with the utmost care taken of the sensitive and unique Tasmanian environment.
We are also supporting the attachment of an emerging Tasmanian Aboriginal filmmaker to the production team and have assisted with providing the crew with local talent.
Supporting projects like this through our Screen Innovation Fund continues to advance the screen production industry, build the skills of Tasmanian crews and enable the state to host projects like this that continue to advance the screen production industry.
This announcement caps off a record year for screen production in Tasmania with Alone Australia adding to the list of TV shows filmed in Tasmania in 2022, following Paramount’s The Bridge, ABC’s Bay of Fires, Amazon Prime’s Deadloch and episodes of Masterchef Australia, providing ongoing and sustained employment for Tasmania’s screen sector.
The series will broadcast on SBS and SBS on Demand in 2023.
