A pathway to ensure young Tasmanians are in education, training or work has been unveiled as part of Tasmania’s first ever Youth Jobs Strategy.

Minister for Skills and Training, Felix Ellis said that by investing in our young people, we can future-proof our workforce for years to come.

“Young people are Tasmania’s future, so it’s crucial that we’re focused on making sure the opportunities are there for them to build a life in our state,” Minister Ellis said.

“This exciting strategy gives us a clear view on what more we can be doing to improve the lives of young people in Tasmania.

“We will build on what’s already working well, like our highly successful Regional Jobs Hubs that are supporting local young people into meaningful employment, and we’ll be working closely with local industry to make sure we’re getting the best possible outcomes for our economy and our communities.

“The strategy will help businesses and industry develop their skills and confidence to invest in young people, meaning they are attracting and retaining the skilled workforce they need while improving productivity and participation across the broader economy.

“Supporting a job-ready generation of young Tasmanians is a key focus of our Government’s 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future.”

Released today, the Strategy will align efforts across governments, industry, the education and training sector, and community to help young people identify a pathway to employment, education, or training.

Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, said we want all young Tasmanians to feel empowered and supported to access meaningful education, training or employment opportunities.

“The transition from school is a critical step in the journey to independence and can be a daunting time for many young people,” Minister Palmer said.

“The Youth Jobs Strategy will ensure that our students are supported in their final school years, ensuring they know the opportunities and services that are available as they navigate the pathway that’s right for them.”

The Youth Jobs Strategy is being supported with nearly $59 million in programs and initiatives under the Government’s 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, which includes turbocharging vocational education and training in our secondary schools and colleges, a comprehensive driver education program, and resourcing for our nation-leading Regional Jobs Hubs.
