Trevallyn Power Station upgrade helps secure Tasmania’s renewable future

Tasmania continues to lead the nation by being 100 per cent self-sufficient in renewable electricity and today’s upgrade at the Trevallyn Power Station will ensure that continues into the future.

Hydro Tasmania plans to spend about $100 million per year for the next decade to upgrade and modernise its significant asset portfolio.

Today, we can welcome the $17.5 million refurbishment of the No 1 machine at the Trevallyn Power Station which will increase its lifespan for a further 30 years and also result in a 5 per cent increase in machine efficiency, meaning it can now produce more electricity with the same amount of water.

The Trevallyn Power Station was commissioned in 1955 and houses four Francis turbines that provide a total average energy contribution of 450 GWh per year to the system.

This represents approximately 5 per cent of Hydro Tasmania’s average annual output of 9,000 GWh.

Tasmania has a legislated target of being 200 per cent renewable by 2040 and maintaining the long-term capability of the hydropower system is critical to delivering this renewable energy.

Congratulations to the Hydro Tasmania team and Entura Energy on completing this major project during the past 21 months, and also the assistance of several Tasmanian companies including PSL Project Services, RBD Electrical, and Tamar Engineering.
