Roy Fagan Centre Report

The Tasmanian Government has accepted all recommendations in the Roy Fagan Centre review and is already moving to ensure they are fully implemented as a priority.

Importantly, changes to processes and procedures at the Roy Fagan Centre have already been made, including:

• New protocol for wound care including training for all nurses;
• New systems for checking on hygiene needs and how to assist patients who may be resistive during care;
• Updated processes for open disclosure;
• Revision of care plans to include comprehensive summaries available to all staff;
• New protocols for documenting care given by Assistants in Nursing or Ward Aides; and
• Improved handover practices.

Labor’s claims that the Government has been sitting on this report are desperate and simply false.

It was made clear that due to the State election and associated caretaker period earlier this year, there was a delay in my receiving the final report and the report was modified in June 2021 by the report author, Chief Psychiatrist Dr. Aaron Groves, for public release in respect of the wishes of the family.

I received the report on Monday, 12 July 2021.

Now that we have the recommendations of the review, we have committed to developing an implementation plan which will inform costings and timelines.

I am confident that this will significantly improve the level of care and treatment provided to older Tasmanians, and better meet the needs and expectations of the Tasmanian community.

Briefings on the report have been offered to both Labor and the Greens.
