Reforming Tasmania’s electricity safety provisions

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is committed to keeping Tasmanians safe in all areas of life, and that’s why today I tabled in Parliament legislation to help make Tasmania’s electricity industry safer.

The importance of electricity safety cannot be overstated, and Tasmania needs robust and up-to-date laws to ensure the safety of our community.

The Electricity Safety Bill 2022 will:

  • regulate the safety and maintenance requirements of electricity infrastructure, electrical installations and electrical equipment;
  • regulate the safety requirements of certain activities near electricity infrastructure and electrical installations; and
  • apply current technical standards, to ensure the safety of electricity infrastructure, electrical installations and electrical equipment, so that they are designed, maintained and managed in a manner that protects people and property.

These important reforms consolidate existing electricity safety laws and provide a modern legislative framework that reduces duplication and improves flexibility in adopting and managing new electrical technologies as they develop.

We have consulted widely on the Electricity Safety Bill 2022, including with key industry stakeholders, during two periods of consultation throughout the development of this Bill.

Improving energy safety regulation has been an ongoing commitment of the Tasmanian Government and we now look forward to the Bill’s passage through Parliament.
