Public views sought on West Tamar Highway duplication near Legana

The Tasmanian Liberal Government plans to duplicate the West Tamar Highway in Legana as part of its ongoing efforts to improve safety and traffic flow on this important Tamar Valley route.

Concept designs for the project have now been completed and are available for public viewing and feedback.

This is the first of eight priority projects identified in the West Tamar Corridor Improvement Plan, which was published in February 2022 after extensive community consultation.

The duplication project will improve travel times, transport reliability, and safety for all road users, as well as providing safe access to the planned Legana Primary School.

It will upgrade two kilometres of the highway between Freshwater Point Road and Acropolis Drive from one lane in each direction to two.

Other improvements include upgrading the Freshwater Point Road and Acropolis Drive roundabouts to dual lane and the creation of a new dual-lane roundabout at the Bridgenorth Road intersection.

Proposed safety measures include a central median island to separate traffic, and two new signalised pedestrian crossings, including one near the planned primary school.

To provide the local community with active transport options, on-road cycle lanes are included along both sides of the highway, and a shared path for cyclists and pedestrians is planned for the eastern side. Off-road cycle paths are also planned to help cyclists negotiate the three roundabouts.

Public feedback can be provided from today until Wednesday, 14 December 2022. The designs will be displayed during this period at the West Tamar Council offices. They can also be viewed on the Transport website at: www.transport.tas.gov.au/westtamarduplication
