Madeleine Ogilvie, Minister for the Environment

Feedback has opened on the draft Threatened Species Strategy, which sets clear direction to protect Tasmania’s unique species and better frameworks for development.

The draft Strategy envisages a future where Tasmania’s species are resilient and thriving, while providing simpler regulatory settings for industry.

Minister for Environment, Madeleine Ogilvie, said Tasmanians are passionate about our amazing plants and animals.

“Tasmanians want to see our biodiversity assets preserved and conserved, but it is also important we have clear guidelines and streamlined decision-making to make it easier for environmental considerations to be integrated into early project planning,” Minister Ogilvie said.

“The draft Strategy shifts Tasmania from a fragmented, species-by-species approach to a prioritised, evidence-based system.

“We are delivering more efficient decision-making and better integration of environmental safeguards into planning and development.”

The draft Strategy encompasses the current challenges and opportunities of threatened species management in Tasmania.

A consultation paper released alongside the draft Strategy seeks feedback on proposal.

“We all have a role to play to protect Tasmania’s flora and fauna so future generations can experience the same rich biodiversity we do today,” Minister Ogilvie said.

“We want to improve processes while also protecting our environment.

“Our Government is delivering for Tasmanians by working together with the community to develop clear strategies for managing our threatened species.”

Feedback can be provided by completing the online survey at https://nre.tas.gov.au/conservation/threatened-species-strategy/community-consultation or submitting a written response by email to ThreatenedSpeciesStrategy@nre.tas.gov.au.

The finalised Strategy is expected to be completed in mid-2026.
