Numeracy Plan for Action Released

The Numeracy Plan for Action 2021-2025 has been launched today as part of the Tasmanian Liberal Government’s Plan to improve education outcomes in the State.

The Plan is a key part of ensuring that all Tasmanians have the numeracy skills they need for engagement and active participation in life, work and further study.

A number of actions and priorities are listed in the plan which aim to improve numeracy performance, and will be used by the Department of Education to drive improvement over the next five years.

The Plan also identifies four priorities with five explicit actions, and has been developed through extensive engagement and collaboration including:
*Attention to the importance of numeracy skills and understanding across all ages;
*Quality teaching of mathematics to improve numeracy;
*Valid and reliable measures of impact and learner growth in Mathematics; and
*Strengthen and expand the numeracy teaching workforce.
The Tasmanian Liberal Government has employed an additional 40 FTE Quality Teaching Coaches across our schools and colleges.

In February 2021, the Numeracy Coaching Initiative Pilot commenced, supported by six Lead Quality Teaching Coaches who provide targeted support and guidance for teachers and leaders in participating schools.

The aim of the coaches is to work collaboratively with teachers to build knowledge of the curriculum and implementation of effective teaching practices

The Tasmanian Government’s commitment to improving educational outcomes in Tasmania is demonstrated by our record $8 billion investment in education over the forward estimates.
