Improving the visitor experience at Hobart’s Cascade Female Factory

A new History and Interpretation Centre has officially been unveiled at Hobart’s Cascade Female Factory thanks to a $5 million investment from the State and Federal Governments.

Minister for Women and Liberal Member for Clark, Madeleine Ogilvie, said the redevelopment would provide an even better visitor experience for one of Hobart’s most iconic tourism attractions.

“The World Heritage listed Cascade Female Factory has been an iconic and award-winning site in Hobart for decades, and this will future-proof the site and ensure this can continue for years to come,” Minister Ogilvie said.

“Our Government recognises its importance and the significant historical stories of the female convicts who inhabited the site.

“These improvements will enhance the visitor experience even further while offering an important and engaging look at the role of women during the convict era."

The Tasmanian Government committed $3 million to the redevelopment, with the Federal Government contributing $2 million.

Liberal Senator for Tasmania, Eric Abetz, said he was pleased he could see the official opening after visiting the site last July and said the investment would preserve and enhance the site for future generations and tourism.

“Not only is this an important investment protecting our heritage for future generations, but it will also be a massive boon for local tourism and the city of Hobart.

“We’re continuing to ensure our State is a must-see destination and I encourage all to come and visit this incredible World Heritage Site.”

The site and the new History and Interpretation Centre will officially be welcoming visitors from tomorrow, March 26 2022.
