The Tasmanian Government will lead a tourism and trade mission to New Zealand later this year as part of our plan to grow and diversify our opportunities across the globe.
Premier Peter Gutwein said that off the back of the new direct Air New Zealand flights between Tasmania and Auckland, we will travel across the Tasman in late September to showcase everything our State has to offer.
“The mission will identify emerging opportunities for growth between New Zealand and Tasmania in sectors like advanced manufacturing, defence, food, agribusiness, the Antarctic and the energy and carbon sector - and of course our magnificent tourism offerings,” the Premier said.
“This will not only result in exciting new opportunities in the New Zealand market for Tasmanian exporters, but will also open up access to other international trade routes using Auckland as a hub for international connections to the western seaboard of the US, Eastern Asia and the South Pacific.
“I expect this mission will be well supported, with early indications that upwards of 20 tourism and hospitality operators will participate on this initial five-day mission, aligning to areas of opportunity.
“I will also take the opportunity to request a meeting with the New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and other senior Ministers to further advance our countries’ strong relationship.
“I will be joined by the Minister for Trade, Guy Barnett, and we will also travel to Wellington to progress key trade opportunities in the areas of defence and maritime services.”
Minister for Trade Guy Barnett said that during the recent state election, the Tasmanian Government had committed to develop and implement an integrated trade strategy with New Zealand.
“The world wants what Tasmania has and a more diverse trade and tourism strategy means more jobs and more opportunities for our State,” Minister Barnett said.
“Work is underway on our integrated trade strategy as part of our first 100 day commitment and the New Zealand mission will help further inform its development.”
