Bass Strait Islanders to have their say on transport needs

Community consultation is now open on the Tasmanian Government’s Bass Strait Islands Transport Strategy.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Kerry Vincent, said King Island, Flinders Island and truwana/Cape Barren Island communities are encouraged to have their say.

"The strategy will help guide investment decisions for the islands and ensure the needs of island communities are reflected in planning processes,” Minister Vincent said.

"Reliable and accessible transport connections are vital to the social and economic wellbeing of Bass Strait island communities, and delivering strong regional communities is a key part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future.

"This strategy is an opportunity for island residents, businesses and community groups to share their experiences, identify challenges and help shape priorities for the future. We want to hear directly from the people who rely on these services every day.

“Whether it's freight, passenger transport, aviation, maritime services or local transport connections, community feedback will play an important role in developing this strategy.”

Community drop-in sessions and industry workshops will be held across the islands to provide an opportunity for people to speak directly with the project team, learn more about the strategy, and share their ideas for improving transport outcomes.

Targeted industry workshops will also be held on King and Flinders islands, providing an opportunity for freight operators, transport providers, businesses, primary producers and other industry stakeholders to have their say.

Any residents or businesses who are unable to attend a community or industry session can also participate through the online survey or make a written submission.

Consultation closes on Tuesday, 18 August 2026.
