Convict stories highlighted in new panels at Highfield

Interpretative panels have been installed at the Highfield Historic Site, showcasing the history of the outbuildings and grounds.

Liberal Member for Braddon, Minister Roger Jaensch, said the new panels will enhance the visitor experience to the important tourist drawcard.

“The Rockliff Liberal Government is preserving Tasmania’s heritage and investing in tourism,” Minister Jaensch said.

“Highfield Historic Site, faithfully restored and conserved by the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service over many years, offers visitors an insight into the early colonisation of Tasmania and features the North West’s Van Diemen's Land Company.

“The new panels tell the extraordinary stories of the real characters that make up Highfield’s history – the 80 convicts who worked for the Van Diemen’s Land Company, their crimes, sentence, name of the ship and the punishment they received.

“These panels and the stories they feature will be an added asset for this North West Coast attraction, which drew more than 16,000 visitors in 2022.”

Created by Launceston based noagroup, the panels have been installed across the site including at the school room, barn, slaughterhouse, stable stalls as well as the privy and workers cottage.
