The Tasmanian Government is continuing to progress our plan for a Northern Regional Prison that will create more than 1,000 jobs and deliver an economic boost of $500 million to the region.
It will also provide a modern prison facility for the North of the State that will be designed to increase rehabilitation outcomes for prisoners and their families.
As part of the continuing due diligence on the site, the Department of Justice (DoJ) is undertaking further geotechnical investigations, with drilling commencing today to enable soil and rock core testing at the site.
This work follows on from some earlier geotechnical drilling work undertaken in October 2020, and will continue to progress over the coming week.
DoJ has developed an Environment Management Plan to guide the drilling process, and a works authority has been obtained to ensure sensitive natural values identified on the site are appropriately managed.
Importantly, these areas have been clearly marked as exclusion zones and will not be entered into by drilling equipment.
All surrounding property owners were informed of the planned geotechnical works prior to them commencing.
