More apprentices seeking rewarding careers in construction

An additional 27 new entry-level apprentices are now on the path to a rewarding career in the building and construction sector thanks to the North West Tasmania Building Futures Program.

Delivered by the Tasmanian Building Group Apprenticeship Scheme (TasBGAS) in partnership with local schools and employers, the program provides an entry-level pathway into an apprenticeship or traineeship in the industry.

In only its second year, the program is already seeing success, with 13 apprentices from the 2020 intake continuing their training, four of the school-based apprentices progressing into full time apprenticeships and one remaining as a school-based apprentice.

Importantly, the program supports a rewarding career and bright future for young Tasmanians, with trades now among the best paid roles available, and sectors like building and construction offering steady employment opportunities.

As the Tasmanian Government sets out on our $3.1 Billion ‘Construction Blitz’, with a record $5 billion in infrastructure investment on the table overall, we will need more skilled workers on the ground in the building and construction sector. This program helps build the pipeline of work-ready tradespeople we need to strengthen our economy and drive employment in our local communities.

North West Tasmania Building Futures Program is funded by the Australian Government’s $3.9 million North West Tasmania Job Ready Generation Package supporting the upskilling of 600 north-west Tasmanians in agriculture, mining, manufacturing, building and construction.

The Tasmanian Government supports the creation of well-structured, continuous and cohesive education, training and employment pathways for our learners in years 9 to 12.

Programs such as the Building Futures Program provide more options for young Tasmanians deciding on the right career path for them as they head towards the end of their formal school years.
