More homes and better living as new units transform site

The Australian and Tasmanian Governments are continuing to deliver more safe, secure and high-quality housing for Tasmanians while making better use of our available land.

Fifteen new two-bedroom social housing homes have been completed in Berriedale, replacing two ageing blocks of units and transforming the site into a modern medium-density community.

Delivering medium-density developments such as this is critical to our work to ease housing pressures in areas of high demand, without the need to expand Tasmania’s urban footprint.

The 15 homes were built to the Silver level of the Livable Housing Design Guidelines, while the bathrooms meet the Gold standard, ensuring the homes provide greater flexibility and adaptability for residents as their needs change.

Importantly, the units are already providing secure housing for Tasmanians on the Housing Register, with the first tenants moving in last month.

The development was supported by $7.2 million from the Australian Government through the Social Housing Accelerator Payment program (SHAP), alongside a $2.3 million contribution plus land from the Tasmanian Government.

The project is one of seven Tasmanian developments receiving a combined $50 million through SHAP, supporting the delivery of 128 social and affordable homes across the State.

With 25 SHAP-funded homes now completed and a further 65 expected to be completed in the coming months, this investment is helping increase the supply of quality housing as the Tasmanian Government works towards its target of delivering 10,000 social and affordable homes by 2032.

The project was delivered by Fairbrother Construction, with the design developed by Preston Lane Architects.
