Tourism, hospitality businesses lead the way in emissions reduction

Fourteen Tasmanian tourism and hospitality operators are receiving funding to help reduce emissions produced by their business.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is investing more than $620,000 in these businesses through its Tourism Emissions Reduction Grant Program.

Premier and Minister for Tourism, Jeremy Rockliff, said the grant was just one of the ways our Government was delivering its commitment to be a leading destination for climate-conscious travel.

“From a winery to accommodation businesses, the successful applicants are using this funding to purchase equipment such as electric vehicles, solar power systems and EV charging stations, to reduce emissions within their businesses,” Premier Rockliff said.

“We know Tasmania offers the tourism experiences that the world wants and our Government is investing in these businesses to ensure they can continue to lead the way in the global sustainability agenda.

“The Tasmanian Liberal Government is supporting our world-class tourism and hospitality sector to play a role in our world-leading low-emissions economy, while also creating jobs for future generations.

“I congratulate the successful applicants, and all tourism and hospitality operators who are working to reduce their footprint and operate sustainably.”

Successful applicants:

  • Moorilla Estate: Replace lighting with LED & composting waste
  • The Old Woolstore Apartment Hotel: Installation of solar power system
  • Silo Hotel: Installation of EV chargers for guests
  • DarkLab: Reusable plates and cutlery
  • Wynyard Waterfront Motel: Replacement of gas hot water system
  • Sanctum Boutique Apartments: Installation of two EV charging stations
  • Oceana B&B: Purchase of electric vehicle
  • McDermotts Coaches: Purchase of four hybrid buses
  • Tours Around Tasmania: Purchase of luxury electric vehicle
  • Harrison House: Installation of double-glazed windows
  • Pennicott Wilderness Journeys: Installation of solar power system
  • The Cove Tasmania: Purchase of electric ATV’s/EV charger
  • Bellgrove Distillery: Purchase of electric vehicle
  • Blue Derby Pods Ride: Purchase of electric van

The program provided one-off grants up to $50,000 for small and $100,000 for medium to large tourism and hospitality businesses to operators who had already completed an emissions audit.

These grants also directly align with our 2030 Visitor Economy Strategy, which outlines a commitment to establish Tasmania as a global leader in responsible and sustainable tourism.

“Our Government is investing in tourism and hospitality operators to reduce their emissions as we move to a more circular economy,” Premier Rockliff said.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government has provided $300,000 to Tourism Industry Council Tasmania to support operators to undertake emissions audits and carbon accounting.

Premier Rockliff said this will help businesses better understand their emissions profile and be in a position to develop plans to reduce their footprint.

More information on these programs is available on the TICT website.
