Supporting mental health in our seafood sector

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is committed to improving mental health outcomes for Tasmanians as we know it can lead to a happier and better quality of life for everyone in the community.

In line with this commitment and as we mark R U OK? Day, a new training vessel supporting mental health in the seafood sector has been launched today.

The training vessel, Mariner, was built by boat builder and commercial fisher James Onne, with the visual logo on the boat to promote awareness of mental health issues faced by workers in our seafood industry.

We know the seafood industry was one of the sectors hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, and this initiative demonstrates our shared dedication and commitment to the health and wellbeing of Tasmania’s seafood industry employees.

It also supports the important work undertaken by Seafood and Maritime Training to educate and support new entrants to the seafood sector - ensuring mental health is a priority in training.

The training vessel is part of the Stay Afloat Program which is delivered in partnership with the Tasmanian Seafood Industry Council and Rural Alive and Well (RAW).

The Tasmanian Government has supported the vessel through the Government’s COVID Recovery Funding support for seafood sector training, and also our commitments under the Stay Afloat program.
