Delivering more social and affordable housing

The Tasmanian Government’s plan to deliver land faster for social and affordable housing has taken a major step forward.

Minister for Housing and Planning, Kerry Vincent, said the Housing Land Supply (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill 2026 has passed the Legislative Council.

“This change will deliver provisions to shorten the time frames for rezoning land when required,” Minister Vincent said.

“This ensures Government land is available for housing sooner while keeping important checks and balances in place.”

The key changes are:

• A Housing Land Supply Order may be brought into effect through a positive resolution of both Houses of Parliament.
• Reducing the administrative load on Government and the Commission when implementing an approved Order.

“These proposed amendments will ensure a much more efficient process for delivering housing across our state and aims to reduce potential delays when Parliament is in recess,” Minister Vincent said.

“Providing Tasmanians with a safe, secure place to call home is a key part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s future.”

Since 2018, the Housing Land Supply Act 2018 has been used to rezone more than 70 hectares of land for housing, creating the potential for up to 1000 new homes.
