Students do their part to clean up Tasmania

Tasmanians are encouraged to do their bit for our environment by participating in dozens of Clean Up Australia Day events being held across the State.

Environment and Climate Change Minister Roger Jaensch joined students from Cooee Primary School as they cleaned up their local beach.

“I would like to thank students from Cooee Primary School and their principal, Marcelle Norton, for the work they’ve done to clean up the beach,” Minister Jaensch said.

“The school’s efforts help to inspire students to learn about the impact of rubbish on their local environment while playing an active role in their community.

“It’s also an opportunity for students and teachers to work together to clean up an area that is special to them – whether that’s a local park, beach or bushland near their school.

“I know how important the beach is to the Cooee community, so it’s wonderful to see the school involved in cleaning it up.”

Officially held on March 5, Clean Up Australia Day is the nation’s largest community participation event, but it is only one of the ways we are managing litter in our state.

Our Government is committed to reducing litter and increasing resource recovery and recycling which is why we are commencing our container refund scheme, Recycle Rewards, later this year.

The scheme will help reduce beverage container litter and maximise recycling rates for these materials, creating jobs in our economy.

Our Government has also launched Report Rubbish which allows members of the community to report littering and dumping on public land via their smartphone, or other electronic device or computer.

We encourage everyone to do the right thing and dispose of their waste appropriately to keep our state clean for everyone to enjoy.
