The Tasmanian Liberal Government has been working hard to reduce the number of serious injuries and fatalities on our roads through the Towards Zero Action Plan 2020-24 by committing over $75 million across 42 initiatives based on crash data and statistics.
As part of these ongoing efforts to keep Tasmanians safe, the Road Safety Advisory Council has invited the Tasmanian community to speak up to help stop road fatalities at the upcoming Regional Road Safety Forums.
This year is tragically is shaping up to be the worst year for road deaths in over a decade, with the Tasmanian community already having suffered 36 fatalities on our roads.
In recent years, the Tasmanian Liberal Government has delivered many initiatives under the Action Plan, including:
*the procurement of eight new mobile cameras to increase enforcement and deter people from speeding and, in the future, other risks to road safety;
*the introduction of a package of enhancements to the driver Graduated Licensing System (GLS) to improve road safety outcomes for novice and young drivers, including the Plates Plus Platform and Hazard Perception Test; and
*ongoing media and education campaigns to increase the awareness of the fatal five driving behaviours and vulnerable road users.
Sadly, the number of fatal and serious injury crashes on Tasmanian roads remains unacceptably high.
These forums are an opportunity for the community to work with us to reduce the road toll in Tasmania.
I encourage everyone to attend one of the upcoming forums and have their voices heard.
