Tasmania will experience an economic boost of almost $2 million from this Sunday’s inaugural IRONMAN 70.3 event.
Set against the idyllic backdrop of the Hobart waterfront and historic Salamanca, the triathlon will see more than 1,100 people compete on a challenging course.
Tasmania is the newest destination to join more than 170 IRONMAN triathlons worldwide, showcasing the State as a unique travel destination to athletes and supporters visiting from interstate and overseas.
Minister for Hospitality and Events, Nic Street, said IRONMAN 70.3 competitors will tackle a 1.9km swim in the Derwent River, 90km ride out toward the Bowen Bridge and a 21.1km run in and around Hobart – a total of 70.3 miles that gives the event its name.
“The event will deliver a significant economic benefit of an estimated $1.9 million for Tasmanian tourism and hospitality operators across the State, with many athletes and supporters staying on to explore the regions and sample our world-renowned produce,” he said.
“The Rockliff Liberal Government is attracting large scale events such as this to the State, which bring with them wide-ranging benefits.
“Through Events Tasmania, we are supporting the delivery of IRONMAN 70.3 events for the next five years.
“I congratulate everyone involved for their dedication and passion and wish all of this year’s competitors the very best of luck.”
