Today’s ABS data shows that Tasmania’s population continues to grow steadily as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic.
At September 2020, Tasmania’s population was 541,100 which is 5,300 (1 per cent) Tasmanians higher than the previous year and confirms that, despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Tasmania remains a great place to live, work, and raise a family.
This represents the third highest annual growth in the country, and is higher than national growth over the same period of 0.9 per cent.
In the year to September, 1255 people moved from interstate to Tasmania and there were 1411 babies born across the state, 331 more than the year before.
In early 2014, Tasmania had the second-slowest growth rate in Australia and trends evident at that time indicated Tasmania’s population would be in decline by 2050.
The Government committed to reverse this trend, setting a bold and ambitious target to increase the State’s population to 650,000 by 2050. The current growth exceeds that required to achieve our population target.
The careful management of the State’s economy, health and wellbeing during this period means that now, with confidence returning and employment growing, we can focus on securing Tasmania’s future.
We have emerged from the pandemic with a strong economy and business confidence leading the nation, and a clear focus on our shared future.
And we have good reasons to be optimistic.
