Parliament’s return to focus on strengthening our economy and creating jobs for Tasmanians

Parliament returns again on Tuesday after adjourning two weeks ago to pay our respect to the passing of the late Monarch, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

As a matter of priority, the Parliament will address the legislative arrangements to retrospectively enact the public holiday for last Thursday 22 September by amending the Statutory Holidays Act 2000.

On Tuesday we will also provide all Members of the House the opportunity to pay tribute to the life and service of Queen Elizabeth II.

While a joint condolence motion was passed by both Houses on our last sitting day, it is important that all elected Members are afforded the opportunity to make a personal contribution on the matter.

Our legislative agenda reflects our plan to strengthen our economy and create jobs for Tasmanians.

The coming week will include debate on the Land Use Planning and Approvals Amendment (Major Projects) Bill that will further streamline the assessment process for major projects in the State.

Completing major infrastructure projects in Tasmania is an important part of the Government’s long-term economic plan, as a growing Tasmanian economy creates jobs and provides the additional revenue for the essential services Tasmanians need.

The Attorney-General will introduce a Bill to amend Tasmania’s building regulatory framework to strengthen consumer protections, increase accountability, and provide for streamlined dispute resolution for residential building work.

This Bill will ensure anyone building a new home in Tasmania will have greater consumer protections and will add confidence for anyone wanting to enter the property market.

This Bill is important as the Government progresses its commitment to significantly increase housing supply in Tasmania, including the delivery of an additional 10,000 social and affordable houses by 2032.

Amendments will also be debated on the Roads and Jetties Act, to modernise the way in which road network maintenance, vegetation management and hazard removal efforts are conducted.

We will also introduce the Animal Welfare Amendment Bill that represents a substantial strengthening of the existing Act and will provide greater protections for Tasmanian animals - including pets, livestock and wildlife.

At its rising, the House will sit again on Tuesday 18 October and 19 October, to make up for the week adjourned.
