Important milestone reached in new phase of Macquarie Point development

In line with Macquarie Point’s move into the development delivery phase, work on another critical milestone is now underway.

The removal of the waste water treatment plant on the site is critical to the development of Macquarie Point and TasWater has been working to plan its removal supported with a $100 million funding contribution from the Tasmanian Government.

TasWater has advised the Government that this work to date has identified the best option to service greater Hobart is to expand the existing treatment plant at Selfs Point, New Town, which will now be supported by an Environmental Impact Study - a key component of the process for the Environmental Protection Authority to consider and approve the plan.

As a former industrial site, extensive planning and rezoning work has needed to occur on site, before Macquarie Point was ready to develop, with this work finalised in 2019.

In the three years since, significant remediation works have been undertaken to remove centuries of soil pollution and parcels of land have been taken to the market ready to develop.

An important component of this has been the work undertaken by TasWater on the waste water treatment plant, with tenders now ready to be released to market seeking partners to design a new sewage pump station and emergency storage; an interconnecting rising main between Macquarie Point and Selfs Point and a significant upgrade and expansion of the existing treatment plant at Selfs Point.

This is a significant project with completion of the decommissioning of the Macquarie Point waste water treatment plant due by 2025.

I’d like to thank TasWater for its work to get to this important milestone, which signals another important step in the Macquarie Point development process.
