Have your say on motorcycle safety

Under the Towards Zero Action Plan 2020-2024, the Tasmanian Liberal Government is investing more than $75 million to improve road safety for all Tasmanian road users.

Tasmanians, particularly motorcyclists, have the chance to have their say on how we can make riders safer on our roads.

We welcome the Road Safety Advisory Council’s (RSAC) review of the Tasmanian motorcyclist graduated licensing system.

Over the past few years, the motorcyclist graduated licensing system has seen enhanced training and assessment requirements for learner and provisional motorcyclists.

Despite this they remain over-represented in crash statistics, accounting for around a third of serious crashes in 2021.

The motorcyclist graduated licensing system review is one of 42 key initiatives under the Action Plan and aims to identify changes that will make new motorcyclists safer.

Motorcyclists are extremely vulnerable road users and are overrepresented in serious casualty crashes in Tasmania.

Learner and provisional motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable; in the last ten years, learner motorcyclists were involved in approximately ten times more casualty crashes than fully licensed riders.

With the enhanced training and assessment curriculum for learner and provisional motorcyclists having been in place since 2017, now we want to see if that goes far enough.

It will even examine whether there is a requirement to introduce more restrictions just like the enhanced driver graduated licensing system which has been hailed a success by both young drivers and their parents.

Feedback provided through the process will contribute to the RSAC’s review of the motorcyclist graduated licensing system and will help determine their recommendation to Government on what more we can do to reduce the number of riders killed or seriously injured on our roads.

Submissions must be received by the RSAC by 21 September 2022.
