Honouring those who served in Vietnam

Today, 18 August, marks Vietnam Veterans Day and the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan.

The conflict had a profound impact on our State, with 2,300 Tasmanians serving in Vietnam.

Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Gavin Pearce, said today is a sacred occasion, allowing Australians to pay special tribute to those who served.

“Today, we pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by our Vietnam veterans,” Minister Pearce said.

“On this day in 1966, D Company of the 6th Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment was engaged in one of the bloodiest battles of the war.

"105 Australians and three New Zealanders were outnumbered 10 to one, and despite all odds, they prevailed.

"We lost 18 of our diggers in that battle.

"Today, we remember all those Australians involved in this war, and acknowledge their service and sacrifice.

"We renew our commitment to supporting them and their families and remain steadfast in our efforts to ensure that these heroes receive the recognition that they have earned.

"Lest we forget."
