Free Wi-Fi across Tasmania's major hospitals - helping families stay connected this Christmas

Just in time for Christmas, secure free public Wi-Fi is now available at Tasmania’s four major hospitals to help visitors and patients stay connected with family and friends during their stay.

The Department of Health is committed to providing the best possible healthcare across our state, and an important part of caring for Tasmanians is ensuring they can stay connected with family.

Patients and visitors at the Royal Hobart Hospital, Launceston General Hospital, North West Regional Hospital and Mersey Community Hospital can now access free Wi-Fi with their own compatible Wi-Fi enabled devices, with no password needed to connect.

Minister for Health, Guy Barnett, said, this will improve patient’s experiences at our hospitals around the State.

“There is never a more important time to ensure that patients and visitors can stay connected to loved ones than Christmas,” Mr Barnett said.

“Free public Wi-Fi means patients and visitors can easily stay connected and access information during their stay.”

The roll out of Wi-Fi across the four major hospitals has been staged to test and monitor the service and provide support as needed, with the North-West Regional Hospital going online in early October.

Plans are underway to provide patients and visitors with access to free public Wi-Fi in district hospitals and regional locations, including King and Flinders islands in 2024.

Delivered as part of the $475 million, 10-year Digital Health Strategy, the Government is transforming the way we deliver patient care by upgrading our digital health infrastructure and making it easier for every Tasmanian to access the best possible healthcare regardless of where they live.

In today’s rapidly changing health environment, the Rockliff Liberal Government recognises that modern digital health infrastructure is just as important as bricks and mortar, particularly as Tasmania’s ageing population and increased rates of chronic disease are projected to drive increased demand for hospital care in the years ahead.
