Delivering on justice for the State's North West

The Rockliff Liberal Government has finalised site acquisition for the new Burnie Courts Complex, the next step towards delivering a modern and fit-for-purpose precinct, enabling the efficient and effective operation of both the Supreme and Magistrates Courts.

The Rockliff Liberal Government is delivering on its long-term plan to do what matters for all Tasmanians by improving access to justice in the North West of the State.

The new complex will provide four courts to accommodate the additional Supreme Court Judge and a number of magistrates; however, Minister for Justice, Guy Barnett, noted that time is running out on a 24 February deadline for the Albanese Government to indicate whether it will agree to Tasmania’s request for $15 million to ensure Federal Court facilities can be included.

Mr Barnett confirmed that site acquisition for the 100-106 Wilson Street site has been finalised, with the property settlement completed on Wednesday 6 December 2023.

“Our Government has committed $86.5 million to deliver the replacement Burnie Courts Complex, which will improve access to justice in the North West of the State, by providing contemporary, fit-for-purpose infrastructure for our clients and stakeholders,” said Mr Barnett.

This project will help revitalise the Burnie CBD and deliver jobs and investment for the North West, with local businesses to benefit from increased trade during construction.

“Importantly, the new courts will feature improved safety and amenity for users as well as disability access.”

Following thorough consultation this year, members of the community and stakeholders clearly identified 100-106 Wilson Street as the preferred location and the Tasmanian Government will now move this project to the next stage.

The site is ideally located on a corner block adjacent to the Burnie Police Station and in close proximity to client-related services, supporting improved court operations and security.

A Request for Tender for the Burnie Courts Complex Relocation Project is now being advertised, with the successful tendered to be determined early next year.

The successful tenderer will be engaged to deliver an effective and efficient Courts Complex design that meets the needs of a modern justice system, while providing a safe and secure environment for all court users.
