The Australian and Tasmanian Governments are continuing to deliver new homes for Tasmanians, with 13 new social housing homes in New Town ready for their first tenants.

The 12 one-bedroom and one two-bedroom units will soon be tenanted by women on the Housing Register who are aged 55 and over, providing safe, secure and modern homes and supporting these women to live independently in their community.

These new homes have been designed with the future in mind, with all properties built to the Silver Level of the Liveable Housing Design Guidelines and bathrooms delivered to the Gold Level.

These features provide greater flexibility and adaptability as residents’ needs change over time, supporting ageing and providing secure homes today while also supporting people’s housing needs into the future.

The new homes replace seven former transitional housing units on the site, almost doubling the number of homes available and making better use of well-located land in an established urban community.

The project is supported by $5.185 million from the Australian Government’s Social Housing Accelerator Payment program (SHAP), with the Tasmanian Government contributing $4.26 million through funding and land.

The Boa Vista Road development is one of seven projects that have received a combined $50 million in funding through SHAP to deliver 128 new social and affordable homes across Tasmania.

Loreto Community Housing will provide tenancy and property management for the new homes, which were designed by Preston Lane Architects and built by Fairbrother Constructions.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Housing and Planning, Kerry Vincent:

“This is an important investment in delivering more homes with women’s housing needs in mind so we can continue to provide safe, secure and appropriate places to call home.

“These 13 new homes will give women aged 55 and over greater security and independence, along with the dignity which comes with having a home of their own.

“This project demonstrates what can be achieved by making better use of existing land and investing in quality, adaptable homes which support people to live safely and independently in their communities.

“These homes also contribute to the Tasmanian Government’s commitment to deliver 10,000 social and affordable homes by 2032, with each new home helping more Tasmanians access the safe and secure housing they need.”

Quotes attributable to Senator for Tasmania, Carol Brown:

“Women are disproportionately affected by homelessness and housing insecurity, and we have a responsibility to make sure our housing system provides appropriate options for women who need a safe and secure home.

“With adaptable and accessible features built into every home, these new properties will support women to remain safely and independently in their homes as their needs change over time."
