COVID-safe Schools Plan for Term 2 now available

Building on a successful start to the school year, the Tasmanian Liberal Government is releasing its COVID-safe Schools Plan for Term 2.

This forward planning is important to ensure Tasmanian Government schools continue to stay open and support learning in COVID-safe ways as we head into the colder months.

Our schools have done a fantastic job in safely managing COVID-19 this term, and although this term has looked different to others, we know that the COVID-safe measures we have in place are key to keeping our schools as safe as possible.

Key changes going into Term 2 include the resumption of indoor Launching into Learning sessions, recommencement of the Gifted Online program, and supporting COVID-safe ways of bringing students together to participate in learning activities.
Public Health has been involved in our planning every step of the way so families can be assured that our schools are as safe as can be.

Many COVID-safe measures will continue into next term, as well as COVID-19 testing protocols, case management and home-based learning provision when required.

COVID-safe measures like increased ventilation in classrooms through natural airflow and use of air purifiers, frequent cleaning of high-touch surfaces and hygiene practices will continue, as we know how important they are in minimising the spread of COVID-19.

As we head into the colder months, schools will use heaters and tower fans to manage air circulation and student comfort whilst ensuring adequate ventilation. Outdoor learning will also continue, for shorter periods and breaks from the classroom when the weather is suitable and students are dressed for warmth.

Our Government will continue to support COVID-19 testing through our schools, with students and staff only needing to test if they have symptoms, or when advised by Public Health, using rapid antigen tests provided by their school.

Each school has an established support network around them who work closely with Public Health to safely manage positive COVID-19 cases – with families being the first to know if there are any impacts.

If a student does need to isolate due to COVID-19, they will be supported by an online teacher via the Virtual Learning Centre.

To help families support their child’s learning at home, our Government is investing an additional $5 million to expand the pool of loan devices such as laptops, tablets and internet dongles available in public schools.

The Department of Education and Public Health will continue working closely with public school communities and the non-government sector to support them with managing COVID-19 in their communities.
