Back to school COVID-19 care packs

Since the start of the pandemic, the Tasmanian Government’s number one priority has been to keep Tasmanians safe.

The evidence is clear that classrooms are the best place for our students, and work is well underway to ensure children can safely return to the classroom.

Our COVID-19 care packs are a key part of our multi-pronged approach to managing COVID-19 in schools, as outlined in the Return to School Operational Plan 2022.

Distribution began yesterday, following the incredible efforts of staff over the weekend to package up the COVID packs.

Each pack for Government school students includes two rapid antigen tests (RATs), surgical face masks, and useful health and wellbeing information for families.

RATs should be only be used if a child has COVID-19 symptoms, and while face masks are mandatory for secondary school students, primary school students can wear them if they choose.

The Independent and Catholic education sectors are in the process of being provided with RATs and face masks to distribute to their school communities.

The Department has supported all Tasmanian Government schools by centrally coordinating the packs, with schools to distribute packs locally to students in a way that best suits their school community.

RATs and face masks will be available at every Tasmanian Government school for students who may request them for at least for the first five weeks of Term 1, in line with our Return to School plan.

In addition, Early Childhood Education Centres started receiving RATs and face masks yesterday.

We know some parents and carers are feeling anxious as we see COVID-19 cases in the community, but attending school regularly is important for improved learning, and health and wellbeing outcomes.

These packs are another safety measure to assure parents about sending their children back to learn, and come in addition to other COVID safe measures including access to air purifiers, well-ventilated classrooms and using outdoor learning spaces where appropriate.
