2022 Annual Student Wellbeing Survey Data

The latest student wellbeing data shows 94 per cent of students reported they had good relationships and support from their teachers.

Now in its fourth year, the survey, All Tasmanian Government School Students, is a critical collection that supports schools to better understand the wellbeing of children and young people.

It also helps schools to better plan and implement related programs and professional learning.

This year’s survey was completed by 28,527 Tasmanian Government school students from years 4 to 12, with evidence showing learners who have greater health and wellbeing are more likely to have better educational outcomes and positive wellbeing throughout their lives.

Key results include:

  • 94 per cent of students reported they had good relationships and support from their teachers
  • 84 per cent of students feel safe at school most of the time
  • 77 per cent of students reported being generally optimistic
  • 71 per cent of students feel that they belong at their school
  • 89 per cent of students felt connected to adults at school
  • 84 per cent of students reported having participated in organised activities at least once a week
  • 87 per cent of students felt they had good quality social support from peers

The Survey captures wellbeing data in the student voice across six child and youth wellbeing domains: being loved, safe and valued; having material basics; being healthy; learning; participating; and having a positive sense of culture and identity.

Most indicators remain relatively stable at the state-wide level from 2021 to 2022.

Pleasingly, the data shows us that while COVID-19 impacted our students, our efforts to support the wellbeing of our students are working.

We are continuing to build on our commitment to provide increased support for students and their mental wellbeing.

Commencing in Term 1 next year, the Department for Education, Children and Young People, in partnership with TasTAFE, will begin delivery of Youth Mental Health First Aid professional learning.

This training, one of our 2021 election commitments, will be available to the Principal and Wellbeing Leads in every Tasmanian Government School and further support them with the tools to focus on students’ mental health and trauma-informed approaches.
